New to cycling and full of questions? You are not alone. Here are clear answers to the twelve questions beginners ask most. Each answer links to a longer guide if you want more detail.

Getting started

1. How often should I ride?

Three rides a week is a good start. Short, regular rides build fitness and confidence faster than one very long ride. See our first 30 days guide.

2. I am not fit. Can I still cycle?

Yes. Begin with short rides on flat routes, ride at a pace where you can talk and increase the time gradually. If you have health concerns, check with a doctor first.

3. How long does it take to ride 20 km?

At an easy pace of 12 to 18 km/h, roughly 70 to 100 minutes. Our four-week plan builds up to it.

4. Is cycling good for weight loss?

It can help when combined with balanced eating, because regular rides burn energy. Results depend on how often and how hard you ride. See our health benefits article.

Comfort and health

5. Do I need padded shorts?

They are not essential, but they make longer rides far more comfortable by reducing pressure and chafing.

6. How do I stop a sore saddle area?

Check the saddle height and angle, wear padded shorts, shift your position regularly and build up ride time gradually. If pain persists, ask a shop for a fit check.

7. Is it safe to cycle with knee pain?

Mild aches are common at first, often caused by a saddle that is too low or a gear that is too hard. Sharp or lasting pain is a sign to stop and get advice from a doctor or physiotherapist.

8. What should I drink and eat on rides?

Carry water and sip regularly. For rides over an hour, take a snack such as a banana or an energy bar.

Bike care and safety

9. How hard should I pump my tyres?

Use the pressure range printed on the tyre sidewall. Road tyres run at higher pressure than mountain bike tyres, and a gauge helps you get it right.

10. Can I ride in the rain?

Yes, with the right gear. Wear a rain jacket, use mudguards and brake early and gently. See our guide to riding in traffic and at night.

11. How often should I service my bike?

Get a professional service at least once a year, and do small checks yourself every week. Our maintenance checklist shows the schedule.

12. How do I stop my bike being stolen?

Use a strong lock, attach it to a fixed object through the frame and a wheel and park in a busy, well-lit place. Learn more in our lights and locks guide.
