Choosing a bicycle raises a lot of questions. Here are straightforward answers to the twelve we hear most often. Follow the links for deeper guides on each topic.

Choosing the bike

1. Which bike is best for a beginner?

For most new riders a hybrid bike is the safest choice because it is comfortable, practical and suits mixed surfaces. See our bike type comparison.

2. Do I need many gears?

If you ride in hilly areas, yes. A range of 7 to 24 gears works for most people. Flat areas and short trips can manage with fewer gears.

3. Are disc brakes better than rim brakes?

Disc brakes work better in wet and muddy conditions and need less hand effort, which is why they are popular. Rim brakes are lighter and simpler. Either can be perfectly safe if well maintained.

4. Which frame material should I choose?

Aluminium is a great all-round choice. Steel is comfortable and durable, and carbon is light but costly. For a first bike, aluminium is hard to beat.

5. Do I need suspension?

Only if you ride rough trails. For roads and light paths, suspension adds weight and cost without much benefit.

Size, price and where to buy

6. How do I know my size?

Start with a height chart, then check standover clearance, reach and saddle height. Our size guide explains each step.

7. Is a cheap bike worth it?

Very cheap bikes often wear out quickly and need repairs. An entry-level bike from a bike shop is usually better value. See the budget guide.

8. Should I buy new or used?

New bikes come with a warranty and a clean history. Used bikes cost less but need careful checking, as shown in our used bike checklist.

9. Where is the best place to buy?

A local bike shop offers assembly, advice and after-sales service. Online stores can be cheaper, but you may need to assemble the bike yourself.

Extras and aftercare

10. What else do I need to buy?

A helmet, front and rear lights, a lock, a pump and a basic repair kit. See essential gear.

11. Are e-bikes worth it?

They are a great choice for hills, long commutes and carrying loads. Read our e-bike guide to see if one suits you.

12. When should a new bike be serviced?

Book a first check after a few weeks, because cables and spokes settle in. After that, service the bike once a year, or more often if you ride daily. Follow our maintenance checklist between services.

This guide is for general information only. Bikes, prices and local rules differ, so check your bike manual and local regulations, and see a qualified mechanic for safety-critical repairs. If you have a health concern, speak to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
